MIWA KOMATSU. Beyond the Eyes”, MUSEC’s new contemporary art project dedicated to the Japanese artist – who is the subject of her first solo exhibition in Europe – opens to the public on Thursday 23 July at Villa Malpensata. On display are around thirty works created between 2012 and 2026, some of which were conceived specifically for the exhibition in Lugano. Painting in a state of semi-trance, Miwa Komatsu opens gateways to ancestral and otherworldly dimensions, evoking, in a whirlwind of colours, intense figures drawn from Japanese mythology, folklore and spiritual tradition. These enigmatic and recurring creatures, with their piercing gaze, establish a direct dialogue with the visitor, taking on the role of spiritual and symbolic guides.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 25 October 2026.
