HELENEUM – LUGANO
Three rooms, three works of art from the South Seas, three colours, one common thread. These are the main elements of the temporary exhibition “Ethnoart. The reading of the ethnic art work in the new layout of the Museo delle Culture”, which aims to make the public familiar with and experience the new project of organising and setting up the MUSEC permanent exhibition. An unconventional exhibition that invites the visitor to go ‘behind the scenes’ of the museum to discover the principles and objectives that govern its exhibition activity. In each of the three exhibition spaces on the ground floor of Villa Heleneum, a work chosen to represent the respective room is presented, rearranged according to the new arrangement and already open to visitors on the upper floors. The first space, dedicated to Polynesia, displays a refined Maori hei-tiki pendant, while the second room, dedicated to the Asmat cultural area, presents a doroe, an intriguing funerary mask. Finally, the third space, reserved for Melanesia, features a finely engraved vayola shield from the Trobriand Islands. In each room an explanatory panel divided into three coloured fields. Black, the expression of night, mystery, emotion, proposes a reflection on the object through thoughts, phrases, poems and an artist’s engraving. White, the symbol of clarity and intellect, offers an accurate and engaging explanation of the work of art, while yellow, the chromatic representation of sharing and community, presents some evocative photographs that contextualise it.
