The Collection consists of 189 works including African ceremonial coins (medium and large sized metal sculptures) and other works of art and material culture from Africa and Oceania.
The works date from a historical period between the 19th and 20th centuries. This is a collection of significant historical, artistic and anthropological value that places MUSEC among the largest collections of its kind.
The works arrived at the museum in a fairly good state of preservation. Some works required restoration work. MUSEC entrusted the study of the works to Dr. Lorenz Homberger, former curator of the Africa Department of the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, in collaboration with Mr. François Mottas. The works had some specific information, having previously been on the market and partly the subject of an auction catalogue, and were all listed in MUSEC’s computerised general catalogue. The Collection is stored in the deposits of the Museo delle Culture. MUSEC plans to hold a temporary exhibition and a specific volume in 2024 to explore the Collection’s meanings and values.
