HELENEUM – LUGANO
The exhibition, which was presented for the first time at the ex-Galleria Gottardo in Lugano in 2007 to wide public acclaim, offers a selection of masterpieces of wooden sculpture created between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century by various ethnic groups from central and southern Borneo. The thirty-nine works on display, all belonging to MUSEC and belonging to the Brignoni Collection, are of inestimable anthropological and artistic value, and constitute the most important collection of this kind in the world. In 2008, the exhibition was repeated at the Scuderie della Villa Borromeo d’Adda. The exhibition, under the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, the contribution of the Lombardy Region and the Province of Milan – Monza and Brianza Project, as well as the Indonesian Government, was organised in collaboration with the Antonio Mazzotta Foundation in Milan. The works on display are divided into two large sections: on the one hand we have the larger sculptures depicting ancestors, priests and spirits, the anthropomorphic poles used for sacrifices and some architectural elements sculpted with zoomorphic motifs; on the other hand, there are refined objects, smaller in size, from the Dayak peoples. Most of the artefacts selected for the exhibition have a fundamental functional, architectural and ceremonial role, evidenced by their often monumental dimensions. The exhibition represents a privileged observatory for reconstructing a civilisation of great artistic and anthropological importance, with specimens of great value even for the modern ethnic art market.

Organised by the Cultural Department of the Arcore City Council, there were also other initiatives, scheduled almost every Saturday during the exhibition period, which acted as a corollary to the exhibition. The first appointment was with the visit-conference Da Matisse a Picasso a Max Ernst. Il primitivismo dei moderni.curated by art historian Elisabetta Parente, which was held on Saturday 25 October 2008 at the Scuderie di Villa Borromeo D’Adda. In concert with the International Academy of Music of Milan, percussion instrument workshops for children and young people were also offered, as well as two performances of Bagong, a recited reading with shadow theatre and puppets, by the Cooperativa Teatro Laboratorio of Brescia.
